The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has unveiled a new directive detailing how Nigeria’s National Anthem and National Pledge should be properly rendered at official functions nationwide.
According to the Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the guideline is designed to promote uniformity, respect, and decorum during the performance of Nigeria’s national symbols.
He explained that, as approved in the national protocol, only the first stanza of the National Anthem should be sung at official events, while the third stanza — recognized as the National Prayer — should be recited at the beginning of such events.
Mallam Issa-Onilu further stated that all three stanzas of the National Anthem are reserved for major national ceremonies such as Independence Day, Presidential Inaugurations, Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Democracy Day (June 12), and the Inauguration of the National Assembly, among others.
He also emphasized that the National Pledge must always be recited at the end of an event as a reaffirmation of citizens’ loyalty and commitment to the nation.
“The National Orientation Agency continues to promote respect for Nigeria’s national symbols and adherence to the proper use of the anthem and pledge,” Issa-Onilu noted. “This is part of our ongoing effort to deepen patriotism, national pride, and unity among citizens.”
The NOA urged public institutions, event organizers, and citizens to comply strictly with the new protocol to uphold the dignity of Nigeria’s national identity.
